The Art of Archie Comics

Welcome to Riverdale! Join the Museum of Comic and Cartoon Art - MoCCA in celebrating the world of Archie Comics, one of the oldest and most beloved family-friendly brands in the comic book industry. Thrill to the exploits of Archie Andrews and his friends, Betty, Veronica, Jughead, Reggie and the rest. And don't be surprised if you see a cameo from Josie and the Pussycats, Sabrina the Teenage Witch, and some of Archie Comics' other supporting players. his exhibition features pages and pages of rare and unpublished comic art by Dan DeCarlo, Joe Edwards, Stan Goldberg, Bob Montana, Harry Lucey, Dan Parent, Andrew Pepoy, Fernando Ruiz and many more! Plus animated cartoons, gold record winning music, as well as vintage house ads, news clippings, custom collectibles, toys and other merchandise from Archie's 65 plus years as America's eternal teenager.

The Art of Archie Comics is curated by Alex Simmons, Ellen S. Abramowitz, Arie Kaplan and Jeff Trexler.

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #50, vol. 2, (491), 2003: Doomed Affairs

The Museum of Comic and Cartoon is pleased to present the original art for the entire issue of Amazing Spider-Man #50, vol. 2: "Doomed Affairs" by J. Michael Straczynski, John Romita Jr. and Scott Hanna.

Story Synopsis
At an airport in Colorado, Peter Parker and Mary Jane Watson run into each other and discuss their relationship and marriage. At that moment, Doctor Doom, king of Latveria, arrives at the airport en route to a diplomatic function. A suicide bomber confronts Doom and blows up the airport. In the ensuing chaos Spider-Man teams up with an undercover Captain America, protects civilians caught in the wreckage, fights robots sent after Doom, and continues his discussion with Mary Jane. When all is said and done, Peter Parker and Mary Jane realize just how much they mean to each other and the two buy plane tickets back home to New York.

About the Artists
John Romita Jr. (penciler)

A member of a comic book legacy and an Eisner and Inkpot award winning artist, John Romita Jr. started illustrating comics in the late 1970s and has since been a part of such celebrated runs as Uncanny X-Men with Chris Claremont, Daredevil with Ann Nocenti, and Amazing Spider-Man with J. Michael Straczynski in addition to others and a creator-owned project, The Gray Area, from Image. Most recently, he has collaborated with Mark Millar on Kick-Ass, as well as its forthcoming film adaptation.

Scott Hanna (inker)
A comic book inker for over 20 years, Scott Hanna started off penciling and inking in the late 1980s, and his first work with DC was in 1989 and Marvel in 1992. He has inked dozens of Marvel and DC's top titles and characters, including long runs on Amazing Spider-Man and Detective Comics as well as several other Spider-Man and Batman-related titles. Some of his most recent work includes Black Widow: Deadly Origin, House of M; Masters of Evil, and War Machine for Marvel. Justice League of America, Outsiders, and REBELS for DC. His upcoming work includes Batman & Robin, Nova and Flash: Rebirth.

J. Michael Straczynski (writer)
A prolific writer and producer in the fields of television and film in addition to comics, J. Michael Straczynski is well known as a creator of the TV series Babylon 5 and screenwriter of the award-winning movie, Changeling. He began writing comics in the 1980s and has since written Marvel and DC titles including Amazing Spider-Man, Thor, Fantastic Four, The Twelve, and The Brave and the Bold and, for a time, wrote series such as Midnight Nation and Rising Stars under his own Top Cow imprint, Joe's Comics.

Peter Kuper
Diario de Oaxaca
A Sketchbook Journal of Two Years in Mexico

MoCCA is pleased to present Peter Kuper's Diario de Oaxaca: A Sketchbook Journal of Two Years in Mexico. This exhibition is in conjunction with the release of his book published in a bilingual edition from PM Press in the US and Sexto Piso in Mexico. Diario de Oaxaca is Kuper's chronicle of his experiences in Oaxaca, Mexico during the political uprising of 2006 and its aftermath. The exhibition includes sketches, illustrations and comics, capturing both the light and shadows that defined his time there.

Peter Kuper's comics and illustrations have appeared in The New York Times, Newsweek, and Time. He has written and illustrated Spy vs. Spy for MAD since 1997. Kuper is co-founder of the political graphics magazine World War 3 Illustrated and the author of over a dozen graphic novels including The System, Sticks and Stones and his autobiography, Stop Forgetting to Remember.
